Masjid al-Jinn is a historic mosque in Makkah built on the site where a group of Jinn embraced Islam after hearing the Prophet ﷺ recite the Qur’an. It lies within walking distance of Masjid al-Haram, close to Jannatul Mualla and Masjid al-Shajarah.
Names of the Mosque
- Masjid al-Jinn: The most common name, from the event of the Jinn listening to the Qur’an.
- Masjid al-Bay’ah: Named because the Jinn pledged allegiance (bay’ah) to the Prophet ﷺ here.
- Masjid al-Haras: Dates to the 3rd century AH, when guards and night watchmen gathered here to change shifts.
Significance
A group of Jinn heard the Prophet ﷺ reciting the Qur’an at this place and accepted faith. A spot within the mosque is known as “The Place of the Writing” (Maudua al-Khatt), linked to the Prophet’s ﷺ documenting of the event.
According to narrations in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, the Prophet ﷺ went out to recite to the Jinn, and Abdullah ibn Masud (RA) stayed within a boundary the Prophet ﷺ drew for him. Scholars such as al-Khafaji mention that Jinn delegations met the Prophet ﷺ six times, which helps reconcile the different reports. Scholars also differ on which encounter led to the revelation of Surah al-Jinn, and Allah knows best.
History of the Mosque
Early historians al-Azraqi and al-Fakihi mention the place in the 9th century CE but record no building. In 1112 AH (1700 CE), heavy rain buried the mosque. When the site was later excavated, the original mihrab was found, and a small mosque with a dome was built to preserve it, later followed by a larger one. The present structure was completely rebuilt in 1421 AH (2000).
